®artspace Sao Paulo is back!

06.04.2010
After a short break from the non-stop 2 year successful partnership with POP in Sao Paulo, ROJO® is back with a new glamorous heavyweight partnership with 600, a superb brand new gallery space that holds several exhibition areas, a bookshop where you will be able to find all ROJO® publications available (seriously, all) and a huge backyard/playground to share your ideas with your friends while smoking those cigars no one lets you smoke while enjoying art events. The opening of the brand new ROJO®artspace Sao Paulo will see also the opening of the first solo show by Yusk Imai, a young brazilian artist, which will be the starting point of ROJO®'s "second coming" into Sao Paulo's art scene... so please be our guest, come by, say hi, check out Yusk's art, have a beer and enjoy!

Yusk Imai Born Into This

06.04.2010 - 08.05.2010
Born in 1982, Sao Paulo's Yusk Imai is an artist with roots in graffiti, who along side contemporaries is leading the way of a new Brazilian art movement. Typified by a style which transcends walls, canvases, streets and galleries while abandoning the preconceived notions that plague popular street art else where in the world, with a focus on expressive scenes, spiritual messages, rich and deep colors with a compositional style which is inspired by Art Nouveau.

HuskMitNavn & Lydia Fong The Last Night

25.03.2010 – 28.04.2010
For this 37th exhibition at ALICE gallery, and for the very first time, Danish artist HuskMitNavn and American artist Lydia Fong will be presenting their latest work together. These two artists have built their reputation in the street, before being recognized by the art world. An East meets West get-together that’s been long awaited by many artists around the world. If HuskMitNavn shines by his talent, the American behind Lydia Fong is a true living legend, however pretentious this might seem to the non initiated.

The Invisible City Group Show

25.03.2010 - 08.04.2010
The Invisible City project explores the city not just as formed by physical space, but also as a collective construction, made up of the memories, desires and experiences of its inhabitants. The city should not be conceived as a unit but rather as the sum of its inhabitants’ multiple points of views which, all combined, create a multi-faceted perspective. Thus, the city is an aggregation of public and private spaces, from which emerges a shared identity allowing us to live in it. This project consists of a series of events, including a film screening accompanied by a live soundtrack, a workshop in public space, and an exhibition featuring work by visual artists from Barcelona (some of them artist residents or former residents from HANGAR visual arts production centre). These events will explore different forms of exchange and interaction between the city and its inhabitants. We will look into the perception and identity of contemporary cities, and at how art can influence their transformation, asking: Do we live in a real city or in the mirage of what it should be?

Joseph Smolinski Beginning of the End

18.03.2010 - 17.04.2010
Mixed Greens is thrilled to present Joseph Smolinski’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. He will exhibit drawing, sculpture, and video related to the environment and the power struggles between nature and technology. This new body of work marks the expansion of Smolinski’s focus. Over the past few years, Smolinski created a world in which cellular communication towers disguised as trees infiltrated the landscape. There, technology proved victorious through these hybrid forms. In the new works, Smolinski visualizes a turning of the tide, where animals and nature play more active roles in their fate. A new series of drawings, titled Disconnected, directly pits animals against the parasitic cell-tower trees. Smolinski questions both the history and preservation of art and the environment as we exhaust our supply of cheap fuel. "Beginning of the End" brings these projects together to reflect on our current interactions with the landscape. It poses questions related to our constant struggle to control the environment and imagines an optimistic, though sometimes apocalyptic, view of the future.

Clemens Behr Black White Everything (and Me)

16.03.2010 - 30.04.2010
Clemens Behr works and experiments within space. His installations seem to take over the place, they are spontaneously build in. Mainly with cardboard, tape, garbagebags and other cheap or found material, he is trying to transform the room he works in. Through simple geometric shapes, the visitor experiences casual confusions of 2D painted and 3D existing objects. Behr mostly chooses material which originally has been made for other purposes and materials he can always rely on. Paper and tapes are cheap, always available, quickly to process, and work without electricity and malfunctions. With an easy folding technique, he quickly processes paper and fills the space with origami-like sculptures, which always relate to the given appearance of the space itself. His works can not only be found in galleries, they also pop up in public places like streets, the metro, or even outside of cities in woods or fields.

There is No Such Thing As a Good Painting About Nothing Group Show

12.03.2010 - 24.04.2010
The exhibition “There is No Such Thing As a Good Painting About Nothing“ focuses a comparable artistic habitus finding its provenance in graffiti and street culture. It is interesting to observe, that approximately 70 years later, in the early 21st century, three artists located in different countries developed their work independently from each other as a new form of abstract expressionism. They build upon the paradigms of graffiti writing and street art but distance themselves radically from established clichés. Ultimately, by doing so, they generate an avant-garde direction within the genre of urban art.

26.02.2010 - 19.03.2010
"Expression is a powerful tool, to express yourself is to bare your soul and show the true beauty that can often lay dormant behind the facade of life. I use personal experience to express myself in my art form and am not afraid to show the many facets of the female form - sensuality, vulnerability, selfishness, pride, despair, adoration... Being self taught artist, I found that my creativity was set alight when working in an experimental environment, free of the constraints of conventional ideas and ways of thinking." - Asha Eve

Rock Me ATM Group Show

25.02.2010 - 28.03.2010
ATM Gallery from Berlin will present some of their top artists at INOPERAbLE. ATM operates as a translator and mediator of Art presented in an urban environment. Its aim is to draw attention to the energetic expressions of an international street-art scene. in the space of a gallery. ATM shows a broad selection of art works created by international urban artist and invites its visitors to take part in the visual language of an urban surrounding, instead of leaving it to the street where it can only be acknowledged by some. In monthly changing exhibitions ATM shows different positions of urban, street- and graffiti artists and their impressive varieties of skills. ATM is not interested in taking streetart from the streets and establishing it as an art form in the white cube of contemporary art – instead ATM likes to awaken an awareness and tolerance of the art form. At the same time ATM supports urban artists by helping them to earn money by selling their works which enables them to continue working in the urban space.

Axel Void's latest work entitled "Numb", will be the first solo-exhibition in Germany for this Miami-born artist, who currently resides in Sevilla, Spain. Void has been making a name for himself as an artist both in galleries and street art circles for nearly 10 years. Black ink on paper and alluring atmospheric oil paintings prevail in Void's diverse selection of canvas and small-scale drawings, which often delve into different states of mind, twisted morality or cultural illnesses. It is with the utmost care and consideration that Void brings to the public light, the images and thoughts that many prefer to leave in the dark.

Alex McLeod Imperial Lands

16.02.2010 - 11.03.2010
Alex McLeod creates 3D landscapes that make you want to live in them. The work is focused on the transformation of matter, and the cycle of life. His candy coated compositions combined with his sense of style, have quickly gained him international recognition. He has been included on countless blogs, including that of rapper Kanye West and numerous upcoming exhibitions worldwide including; San Jose, Toronto, Sao Paulo, and San Francisco.
The works in "Imperial Lands" were all built as, ‘virtual installations, which illustrate the idea of life cycles.’ Alex aims to simulate the idea of recycled matter, and the interconnectedness of all living things through their molecular history. Voluminous smoke stacks and grass emit from bone, while coniferous trees are stripped of their natural colour to instead share the same surface. "Imperial Lands" is displayed in LED backlit ultrathin aluminium boxes, unique pieces of art to present the first landscapes on electronic imperial acid artshow.

Christina Mazzalupo Stomachache

11.02.2010 - 13.03.2010
Mixed Greens is pleased to present Christina Mazzalupo’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. Stomachache is a multimedia exhibition quantifying and categorizing the eight weeks leading up to her 40th birthday. For the show, the results of her extensive, pseudoscientific data collection are translated into eight drawings—one to represent each week. These are accompanied by interpretive oil paintings and sketches, along with a video of over one hundred words associated with the endeavor. Charts from the collected data (pie and others) exist as unique clay sculptures. The objective of the project was to determine whether looking so scrupulously at the minutia in her life would provide a logical method of problem solving or become the source of greater disorder. As Mazzalupo puts it, “we often feel a compulsion to plunge into our habits and let the chatter of our minds run wild, to dissect and reassemble in order to figure it all out.” Mazzalupo engages and chronicles this running wild and all of its by-products. The result is a darkly comic look at the act of paying attention.

MWM Crystals & Lasers

05.02.2010 - 12.03.2010
An ambitious creative spirit, MWM (Matt W. Moore) is travelling to Paris for one month to prepare, from scratch, for his first Paris Solo-Exhibition. He arrives with no art, no supplies, and no firm plan for this new series of canvas paintings. The ideas for the artworks have actualized while processing time spent absorbing French Culture, exploring this Mega-City, the vibrant colors, the exaggerated geometry, and the diverse architecture and fashion of Paris.

The "Crystals & Lasers" Series explores and celebrates the convergence of his dedication to various disciplines of design and fine art. The paintings are to be created entirely with spray paint, one of Matt's favorite mediums. But the designs are very clean, and appear almost digital in their precise details and craft. An honest, analog attempt to achieve the same depth and abstract geometry of his digital "Vectorfunk" style. The goal with each work is to have the viewers eye fall into the piece and get lost in the optical illusions, trying to figure out what is up, down, left, and right. Welcome to the Future!

Roxy Love Ninequi Tequisti

03.02.2010 - 16.04.2010

Continuing her exploration of our intricate and fraught relationship with Nature, Paradise Apparatus explores the sensations and mysteries of chemistry, perception and colour as they relate to the search for fulfilment with references to aspects of science, alchemy, theatre-craft and art making. Overwhelming at times and intentionally experiential, Clark’s installations are made up of two- and three-dimensional elements that spill and spread throughout the gallery space. Made up of a universe of materials from traditional to profane the artworks reflect Clark’s continued process-driven experiments and her work with space, analogy, accumulation, repetition and co-operation. For this exhibition she has primarily used paper and found objects to create a curious interplay between various spaces.
