Christian Rex van Minnen

Christian Rex van Minnen
1980 - Providence - USA

In my work I find myself either suppressing or indulging my own desire to associate personal narrative to the raw visual information inherent in the material and process. Construction, destruction and reconstruction are symbiotic elements in the creative process allowing the image to fluctuate between abstraction and representation, truth and illusion, personal and archetypal.

1975 - Buenos Aires - Argentina

His first pets were two ducks, Tota and Toto, who became important characters on his childhood block. What began as innocent and casual play developed over the years, accompanying his first experiences of intervening in public spaces. His work achieves its potential when his many creations are exhibited in a single gallery space. His ducks lived for 10 years. He doesn’t know if they never had offspring because he desecrated their nests. He has fish now. Some in the freezer and others that are quarreling or fighting in three fish tanks.

James Roper

James Roper
1982 - Knutsford - England

The inspiration for this series of works originated from my interest in Bernini's sculpture 'The Ecstasy of St.Teresa' and how Bernini visualised 'religious ecstasy' in an abstract form and inadvertently drew comparisons to psycho-sexual release. This is explicitly symbolised in the Rapture series by the use of porn stars as the vehicle for the expression of this 'spiritual' emotion, the shedding of carnal bodies giving way to an abstract purity beneath. The idea of release from the material to the spiritual is apparent in many religions as if there were a divine soul trapped in our earthly bodies, this is analogous to contemporary imagery found in comic books specifically the way in which Clark Kent, a normal man, sheds his clothes to become a Superman.

Justine Ashbee

Justine Ashbee
1979 - Nottingham - UK

These drawings are executed purely by hand, using paint pens. She begins with a curve, from which lines and forms start to emerge, evolve, morph, and grow organically, in an intuitive flow, while maintaining delicate, elegant precision. The methodology is rhythmic, spontaneous, and direct, reducing interference with mark-making - much like zen calligraphy, they are improvisational, and intuitively composed, where the physicality and the mark making become one.

I guess the easiest way to describe my work is to categorize it as "Pop Surrealist" or "Low Brow". My work is narrative, character driven, and it's also obvious that I was influenced by comic book and animation cultures. For these paintings, I was inspired by the name of the show and I toyed with the number 8 in both of my paintings.

Mario Wagner

Mario Wagner
1974 - Cologne - Germany

People are the central element in Mario Wagner’s collages. Narratives develop, moods are conjured and relationships are formed by and around the human being. Wagner’s repertoire often plays on fragments of pop-culture, technology or everyday urban life. The figures are trimmed, masked and displaced in more recently built spaces. Mountains are interacting with villages of bungalows, as do stairwells and film cameras from which rays of light protrude. Proportional contrasts and improbabilities are specifically relevant when, for example a gaping red mouth is depicted floating next to a proportionally small head. Wagner’s strategy always entails the generation of insecurity in his audience, in order to nudge the imagination into another world, into an artistic parallel universe. The narrative element is also significant to a great extent. Similar to a paused video film, one assumes the ability to fast forward the images and thus be able to anticipate more of narrative. A part from this aspect, the idea of an animation film of the figures and other constellations lends itself into a sequential impression.
