Fernando Chamarelli

Fernando Chamarelli
1982 - Sao Paulo - Brasil

Fernando Chamarelli is a UNESP formed graphic designer, illustrator and visual artist. He started drawing cartoons, caricatures and realistic portraits and later became involved with street art and tattooing. It is by merging these different mediums that he creates his art. Chamarelli lives in a multicultural country of contrasts, therefore this environment reflects in his work. Including mosaic, geometric elements, organic forms and harmonic lines connecting symbols, legends, philosophies, religions and customs of ancient and modern civilizations. Within this diversity are the strong influence of Brazilian popular culture and pre-Columbian indigenous art. His art follows the rhythm of globalization, bridging borders and cultures closer. The Characters with serious expressions live in different realities and in situations that appear surreal. Music has a very important role during the creation, helping to give flow. Chamarelli currently lives and works in Bauru, São Paulo State.

James Roper

James Roper
1982 - Knutsford - England

The inspiration for this series of works originated from my interest in Bernini's sculpture 'The Ecstasy of St.Teresa' and how Bernini visualised 'religious ecstasy' in an abstract form and inadvertently drew comparisons to psycho-sexual release. This is explicitly symbolised in the Rapture series by the use of porn stars as the vehicle for the expression of this 'spiritual' emotion, the shedding of carnal bodies giving way to an abstract purity beneath. The idea of release from the material to the spiritual is apparent in many religions as if there were a divine soul trapped in our earthly bodies, this is analogous to contemporary imagery found in comic books specifically the way in which Clark Kent, a normal man, sheds his clothes to become a Superman.

Justine Ashbee

Justine Ashbee
1979 - Nottingham - UK

These drawings are executed purely by hand, using paint pens. She begins with a curve, from which lines and forms start to emerge, evolve, morph, and grow organically, in an intuitive flow, while maintaining delicate, elegant precision. The methodology is rhythmic, spontaneous, and direct, reducing interference with mark-making - much like zen calligraphy, they are improvisational, and intuitively composed, where the physicality and the mark making become one.

Luke Chueh

I guess the easiest way to describe my work is to categorize it as "Pop Surrealist" or "Low Brow". My work is narrative, character driven, and it's also obvious that I was influenced by comic book and animation cultures. For these paintings, I was inspired by the name of the show and I toyed with the number 8 in both of my paintings.
