Wagner Pinto presents his own pictorial world for the first time out of his home country, Brazil, in a Eurotour of 3 complementary solo shows (London, Barcelona and Milano), entitled "Floating", to present drawings, paintings and silk-screen prints inspired by the act of believe and faith, in different religious and folklore´s concepts materializing imaginary situations, mental impulses and fine energies which are represented by the artist vocabulary which brings out the forces of the nature, "orixas" mythology, "candomble" religious icons and the mistery about the "Ayahuasca" culture.

To Wagner Pinto, this sensory universe is an inexhaustible source of possibilities that fills in the imagination and makes possible an original representation, without esthetic stereotypes, on a very common issue of brazilian culture. The shows will transform in a fertile and dreaming landscape free of any interpretation. The idea is bring up to the surface, to the senses and views of visitors a floating universe, where even waves of thoughts have a rhythm, harmony, body and color, becoming the invisible visible to human eye, and in this way, try to give a new direction to abstract art.

Lump Hammer Love Bites Group Show

05.02.2009 - 28.02.2009
Concrete Hermit's first exhibition of 2009 is opening on Thursday February 5th and will include work by five artists creating prints, drawings and sculptures in the style of the ‘contemporary grotesque’ - a trip into the unique and intoxicating worlds of Andrew James Jones, Kate McMorrine, James Unsworth, Seth Scriver and Mudwig Dan

Andrew James Jones’ prolific output of paintings, drawings and low budget self published photocopy books are gaining him an ever increasing global following, clashing together many diferent elements into his work to create a truly unique and disturbingly dark, humorous vision.

Kate McMorrine is an artist from the Isle of Skye. Her practice is grounded in the discipline of drawing and deals with narratives found in misheard conversations and the story-telling tradition. Activating the visual with the use of such things as automatic drawing, old photographs and cut outs she forms characters and narratives which inhabit a personal world.

Mudwig Dan’s unique combination of “borrowed” photographs and illustrations make for some very surreal collages. Dan is inspired by things such as animal’s bodies, blitzkriegs, hills, triangles and trees. He finds photos (usually of dogs or women), crops the bit he wants to use, then draws on top of the photos using a combination of Brushpens, Acrylics and other tools

RCA graduate James Unsworth cites Daniel Johnston as one inspiration for his detailed depictions of dark worlds. He draws upon historical images of folk culture and the popular press to show a world where elderly transsexual page three models, faded glamour and popular culture all share the same space, within these images questioning current ideas of taste, beauty, attraction, highness and lowness.

Seth Scriver is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist who records his personal journeys through the eyes of bizarre and active stenciled then drawn characters who feature in his animations, sculpture, painting, and drawing.

Fons Schiedon Revolution Deformation

06.11.2008 - 21.12.2008
Concrete Hermit is pleased to present ‘Revolution Deformation’, the first U.K. solo show by Fons Schiedon, an exhibition of original paintings displayed alongside prints and animation. Central to Schiedon’s work is the figure of Jesus, not the Son of God, but a small mouse-like cartoon character previously dubbed by Schiedon as ‘Badboy Lensflare – the albino in a wheelchair’. He explains: "For a long time there has been one figure popping up in my work; whenever there was a fanzine spread to fill, a sticker to make or simply an unattended moment he would be there."

Previously the character of Jesus had not strayed far from the traditional cartoon/character design, the style of which Schiedon is already well known for; with his history as a designer and animator for Nickelodeon, MTV Asia and Submarinechannel and his characters frequently appearing in books and international conferences. You might expect his work to stay comfortably in that bracket of design/animation, but instead it takes a much more interesting path.

The character is removed from the traditions of modern animation and projected into the traditional medium of painting on canvas. Schiedon stretches and distorts the character until it is hardly recognisable – the images becoming almost expressionistic as the character is twisted and pulled. He says, ‘The character Jesus is an anamorphic figure that lends itself to the projection of ideas, without losing it’s features.’

The story of Jesus is further explored in the exhibition catalogue, which details the characters journey to abstraction. A process neatly described by the shows title: Revolution Deformation.
